Each year in June the community of Barunga, about 80 kilometres on a sealed road east of Katherine, hosts a music, cultural and sport celebration, the Barunga Festival, with traditional dancing by teams from all over the Northern Territory and from as far away as Mowanjum, near Derby, in the north of Western Australia.
And also each year in June the town of Borroloola on the McArthur river, south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, hosts the Malandarri Festival, celebrating arts and culture from the four clan groups living in Borroloola: the Yanyuwa, Garrwa, Gurdanji and Mara peoples.
