The north of Malawi

From Salima, in the Central District, 100 kilometres east of Lilongwe, roads lead north to Nkhotakota and northwest to Kasungu. This is the birthplace of the first President of Malawi, Hastings Kamuzu Banda. He was “Life-President” for almost 30 years until 1993.

Further north, in the Northern Region, is the town of Mzuzu, the capital of the region, and Rumphi, famous for its cattle market. Further north is Livingstonia, founded in 1894 by missionaries from the Free Church of Scotland. They had first established a mission with that name in 1875 at Cape Maclear but abandoned it in 1882. The Livingstonia Mission Church has a stained-glass window depicting David Livingstone.

East of Livingstonia are the Manchewe Waterfalls; beyond that, there are views of Chilamba Bay and Lake Malawi at Chitimba. Heading further north, past Chilmba and Karonga, is the border with Tanzania; a road heading west will reach Chitipa, near the border with Zambia.
