A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg
The sign of the Schutterij “St. Hubertus”, from the village of Ubachsberg, 7 kilometres south of Heerlen, is carried by a young “Bordjesdrager”, followed by four “Bielemannen” (lit. “axe-men”) with their long beards, who carry axes “to clear the road of obstacles”. This is one of the 60 “Schutterijen”, clubs who reenact the traditions of citizen militia that protected towns from attack centuries ago.
