A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

Drums marching past

Women and girls lead the drum band of one of the 60 “Schutterijen” parading in the town of Meerssen, during their yearly festival, in southern Limburg. The tradition of the “Schutterij”, the voluntary citizen militia dating back centuries, is strong among all sections of the population.
