A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

Schutterij “St. Joseph”

The sign of the Schutterij “St. Joseph”, from the village of Sint Geertruid (12 kilometres south of Maastricht on the Belgian border) is carried by two young boys, flanked by bearded “Bielemannen” carrying axes “to clear the road of obstacles” in a yearly festival celebrating the traditions of citizen militia of centuries ago. This “Schutterij” was founded in 1811.
