Republic of Winburg-Potchefstroom, 1838
Andries Hendrik Potgieter, leader of the Voortrekkers, founded the village of Potchefstroom, later the first capital of Transvaal, on 22 December 1838. It united with Winburg and surrounding territories to form a Boer republic. Narrow white stripes were added to separate the blue and red for heraldic reasons and to show the Dutch colours in the flag. In October 1840, it was decided that Potchefstroom would unite with Pietermaritzburg.
