Voortrekkers, 1835

Voortrekkers, 1835

A group of Afrikaners, unwilling to remain under British rule, moved north with their wagon trains: the “Great Trek”. In 1837 they proclaimed their first town, Winburg. Their flag was a red saltire on a blue background. Winburg became later, in 1843, the first capital of the Orange Free State.
