Cape Colony, 1806
On 8 January 1806, Britain again occupied the Cape Colony after a small battle and the Netherlands formally ceded sovereignty over the Cape to the British. Their flag had changed since 1801 when Ireland was made a co-equal member of the United Kingdom. The Irish St. Andrew’s Cross (a red saltire on a white background) was added to the Union Flag, but in such a way that it did not obliterate the existing symbols.
