Malawi, 1964

Upon independence, Malawi adopted a Coat of Arms based on the earlier heraldic arms of Nyasaland. It showed blue and white waves above a golden lion passant on a red background. It is supported by a lion and a leopard above a scroll reading “UNITY AND FREEDOM” and a rising sun between two mountain peaks, representing Mount Mulanje. The crest shows a gold rising sum above white and blue waves with a fish eagle, symbolising Lake Malawi, and a steel helmet with red and yellow ornaments.
