Joseon Kingdom, 1882

The flag, designed by Prince Bak Yeong-Hyo on 22 August 1882 and first used during his diplomatic mission to Japan in September 1882. It was formally proclaimed by King Gojong as the national flag on 6 March 1883. It shows the central “Taegeuk”, the Yin-Yang emblem, symbolising universal harmony and four “gwae”, trigrams from I Ching, an ancient Chinese divination system, important to Daoism and Confucianism.
