Ethiopia, 1975

Ethiopia, 1975

On 12 September 1974, the Derg military junta deposed Emperor Haile Selassie and declared that Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen would be anointed “King” upon his return from abroad. This never happened and in January 1975 Ethiopia’s State flag of green-yellow-red with the imperial lion was modified by removing the crown from the lion’s head and changing the Cross finial to a spear point, symbolising that the powers of the monarchy and the church were eliminated. The lion was also no longer “Lion of Judah” but “Lion of Ethiopia”.
