Empire of Ethiopia, 1897

On 6 October 1897, after having defeated the Italian army at the Battle of Adowa (Adwa) the year before, Emperor Menelik II decided to adopt a national flag, combining the three pennants into rectangles. On the central stripe is the first letter of Menelik’s name in Amharic script.
