Empire of Ethiopia, 1881
In 1881 three coloured pennants, with red on top, was in use in Ethiopia. Not really a “national flag”, it was a symbol of the sovereign, Emperor Yohannes IV. After his death in 1889, when Menelik II succeeded him, the banner was used less frequently, because it was considered a distinctive sign of the deceased sovereign. It was no longer seen by 1904.
