Paphos, the south-west of Cyprus

Mosaic floor, House of Theseus

The 3rd-4th century floor mosaic in the House of Theseus, Kato Paphos Archaeological Park. It depicts, in a medallion, the mythical duel between Theseus and the Minotaur in the Labyrinth of Crete. In the centre, Theseus holds a club in his right hand, while he grabs the horn of the Minotaur, fallen to its knees, with his left hand. On the left side is a personification of the Labyrinth as an older man. Above the rocks are the representations of Crete and Ariadne. The scene is framed by decorations expressing the Labyrinth: a chain of diamonds and colourful tresses symbolising the thread of Ariadne.
