Achilles mosaic, House of Theseus

Floor mosaics in Room 40, probably the main hall, reception room, of the Roman proconsul’s House of Theseus. It depicts the first bath of newborn Achilles, sitting on the knees of his nurse, Anatrophe (Upbringing) next to the basin and his mother Thetis lying on a bed. Behind Anatrophe is a personification of Ambrosia with a jug of water. King Peleus is sitting on his throne, holding a rod and behind him the Three Fates: Clotho with spindle and distaff, Lachesis with her diptych and Atropos, holding an open parchment. Outside the frame is a frieze with hunting scenes, Cupid hunting wild beasts.
