A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

Schutterij “St. Maternus”

A young “Bordjesdrager” carries the sign indicating that the Schutterij “St. Maternus” from Wijlre, about 19 kilometres east of Maastricht, was founded in 1497. The traditions of the civil militia, that used to protect towns from attack and fires, go back a very long time and are proudly carried on, also by the very young.
