A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

Schutterij St. Sebastianus

The “Koninklijke (= Royal) Schutterij St. Sebastianus” from the village of Voerendaal, just 5 kilometres west of the town of Heerlen, dating back, according to its sign, from 1544. This was the time that the voluntary citizen militia would protect the town from attack or fire. Behind the young sign carrier walk the “Bielemannen”, the “axe-men”, who would clear the road of any obstacles. They wear long beards and carry axes and are followed by the drum band.
