The Orange Gate

The “Orange Gate” in the Jacobean Church of Leeuwarden; this was a special entrance for the Stadtholder and his family, made in 1662, to allow the Frisian Nassaus easier access to the burial chapel and royal gallery. Later a copper tree with apples painted orange was placed above this gate. In the 18th Century this gate was called “De Oranjeboom” (“The Orange Tree").
