Franeker, Friesland's cultural centre
“Kaatsen” (Frisian handball) is the national sport of Friesland and nowhere it is played with greater enthusiasm than on the “Tsjûkelân” green in Franeker, where the “PC” (short for Permanente Commissie) championships are held yearly in the summer. It is reputed to be the oldest regulated sports tournament in the world. In the background is the Dutch Reformed Martinikerk, a basilica from the early 15th century with a rich interior.
