Traditions and Folklore in Friesland

“Tobbesteken”, Terschelling

“Tobbesteken” is a bit of folklore in the village of Hoorn on the largest Frisian island of Terschelling. The idea is to run downhill on a little cart, armed with a long pole; the aim is to spear a ring, fastened to a board attached to a tub of water pivoted over the track. If they miss and hit the board, the tub will be emptied over them, as is about to happen here.
