Amsterdam, the Capital of the Netherlands

Burgerweeshuis entrance

The entrance to the Burgerweeshuis (Citizen orphanage) on the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. When in 1578 Amsterdam revolted against the Spanish, the St. Lucien monastery was abolished and the now empty monastery became an orphanage. A new building for little children, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, was added and in 1581 this entrance gate was built with a text by Vondel, saying: “Our second fathers complain that we are growing in number and cost. Do not pass this gate without offering some help”.
