The iNcwala or First Fruits Ceremony in 1970

Making the inhlambelo

Elder men weaving the “emacembe”, the leaves that the boys have brought, into the lower wall of the “inhlambelo”, the sacred enclosure in the “sibaya” cattle byre, where secret iNcwala ceremonies will later be performed. The upper wall has the “lusekwane” branches that had been brought in by young men the day before.
