Paramaribo, Suriname's Capital

Revolution Memorial, Paramaribo

The Revolution Memorial, commemorating the 1980 military coup, on the intersection of Waterkant and Heiligenweg in Paramaribo. It is the work of Jules Chin a Foeng, a political artist who won a design competition staged by the military government in 1981. The monument stands on the ashes of the former police station, a stark three-story wooden monolith that was built in 1925 and burned to the ground in the 1980 coup. All that remains today are five thick round pillars that have been incorporated into the memorial.
