Statue of Kwakoe, Paramaribo

The statue of Kwakoe on the corner of Zwartenhovenbrugstraat and Dr. Sophie Redmond Straat in Paramaribo, a monument to commemorate the centenary of the abolition of slavery on 1 July 1963, designed by sculptor Joseph Classroom. It was unveiled by Prime Minister J.A. (Jopie) Pengel on 30 June 1963. The sculpture represents a freed African slave who has broken his chains. “Kwakoe” is the name for a man born on Wednesday: the abolition of slavery fell on Wednesday 1 July 1863.
