Zulu Royal Standard, 1999
A flag for King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, the Zulu king, crowned in 1971, was first flown on 21 December 1999 in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal. The Royal arms were in the centre of a white field, symbolising purity and peace. It had narrow stripes on three sides: black (representing the soil) and yellow (wealth) at the hoist. At the top: maroon (royalty) and blue (religion); at the bottom: green (vegetation) and red (defence). The Royal Arms is a silver Zulu shield with the “Inhlendla”, the King’s sceptre, the symbol of his authority, between four huts and the Royal Hut that never stands alone, is below it. Two lions support it: the King is the “Lion of the Zulu”. The motto is “ILEMBE LEQA AMANYE NGOKU KHALIPHA” - ‘Together we shall surmount’ - similar to the former South African arms motto, Unity is Strength. King Goodwill Zwelithini passed away on 12 March 2021.
