Free State Province, 1999

Free State Province, 1999

The Free State received its Provincial coat of arms on 7 May 1999. It has a shield, coloured green, representing the grasslands, yellow - the sandstone formations of the Eastern Free State - and blue for the sky. The indigenous Orange River Lily is in the centre of the shield. On top of it is a crown, set with diamonds and corn cobs, representing the mining heritage and rich agricultural lands of the Free State. Two cheetahs support the shield, standing on a base of green, browns and beiges, portraying the earth of the Free State. On a white scroll is the motto, in Sesotho, “KATLEHO KA KOPANO” - ‘Prosperity through Unity’.
