KwaZulu, 1985
On 14 January 1985, the design of the flag of KwaZulu of 1977 was amended: the traditional cowhide shield of a Zulu warrior, on the vermilion-red panel at the hoist, now featured a plumed carrying staff and a Royal Sceptre; two crossed assegais (spears) were behind it. The three narrow horizontal stripes on the white panel were now in the order found on the flag of the African National Congress (ANC); black also represented the people, green stood for the land and gold for its national resources.
