Transkei, 1971

Transkei, 1971

In January 1971, Transkei adopted a coat of arms. It was a shield, in the flag’s colours, a white chevron separating ochre, with a mealie (maise) cob and cogwheel, and green with a bull’s head. Above it were a wicker basket and two aloes. Two leopards supported it on green grass, and a white scroll displayed the motto, in isiXhosa, “Imbumba Yamanyama” (to be interpreted as ‘Unity is Strength’).
