President of the Republic of South Africa, 1984
The first South African Presidential flag, dark blue with the South African a coat of arms, was unsatisfactory, as it did not stand out against the blue field. In 1984 the office of Executive State President came into being, and a new flag was adopted: orange-white-blue, with the white a triangle based at the hoist, and the embellished version of the South African coat of arms in full colour, ensigned with the letters SP (for State President) in gold.
