Zululand Boer Republic (?) 1884

Zululand Boer Republic (?) 1884

After the defeat of the Zulu kingdom in 1879, the British divided Zululand into small districts, each with its chief. One was Zibhebhu kaMaphitha, who tried to create his own independent kingdom. Between 1883 and 1884, he fought Cetshwayo, the Zulu king, who had recently returned from exile and was reinstated by the British. Zibhebu sometimes allied himself with the Boers. Possibly a republic was proclaimed under Boer protection or rule in his district, although it is unclear where exactly this was. Between 1884 and 1897, a flag with yellow-green-red stripes was used in this region, probably absorbed into the “New Republic” or the short-lived “Klip River Republic” and later again made part of Natal.
