South African Republic, 1869
On 18 February 1858, the Volksraad (legislature) of the South African Republic proposed the coat of arms for the new state, featuring a silver field with a wagon and a golden anchor; an eagle rested upon the arms, and it was flanked by a lion and a man in national costume holding a rifle. It was slightly changed in 1869 and now featured a quartered golden ornamental shield with the same symbols and three flags draped down each side. The motto “EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT” means ‘Unity is Strength’.
