'Ava (kava) is a drink made from the dried roots of the pepper plant (Piper methysticum) and has great ceremonial value in Samoa. Laupisi Asi enjoys a cup of it, followed by the girls' dance, in which they use the coconut-shell cups to tap together while the boys dance behind them; by Suluvale Samoa Culture and Performing Arts, based near Cairns, Australia.
