China (Qing Dynasty), 1889

China (Qing Dynasty), 1889

In 1889 it was decided by officials of the Qing Dynasty to adopt a rectangular flag, with basically the same design as the triangular jack that had been used as such since 1872. It featured a dragon, symbol of Imperial power, on a field of yellow, representing the Manchu and the Imperial colour. The dragon was represented with a red “zhu”, a pearl, symbolising power and glory.
