District of Ponape, 1977

A competition was held in 1976 to design a flag for Ponape (now Pohnpei). The design by Rosendo Alex, a student, was adopted in December 1977. It is a blue flag with a ring of six white stars, representing the constituent islands and atolls: Ponape, Oroluk, Mokil, Pingelap, Ngatik, Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi. A wreath of coconut leaves and a cup of “sakau” (kava, the traditional drink) made from half a coconut shell completes the design.
