Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, 1962
The United States Navy initially controlled the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from a headquarters in Guam. In 1951 the United States Department of the Interior took over control, administering the territory from a base in Saipan on the Northern Marianas. In 1962 a flag was adopted, featuring a circle of six white stars on a light blue background: the colours of the United Nations flag. The stars stood for the districts of Palau, Yap, Truk (now Chuuk), Ponape (now Pohnpei and including Kusaie, now Kosrae), the Marshall Islands and the Northern Marianas.
