British Central African Protectorate, 1891

The Coat of Arms of the British Central Africa Protectorate, proclaimed in 1891, was a black and yellow shield with a red-fimbriated white cross and superimposed on it a blue shield with the British Coat of Arms. It was flanked by two African men, carrying a pickaxe and a shovel with above it a branched tree with red fruits on each branch near the trunk and on a scroll, “BRITISH CENTRAL AFRICA”. At the bottom, on a scroll, was the region’s motto, “LIGHT IN DARKNESS”.
