Stone drums, Hwangudan

Three stone drums at Hwangudan, the altar where the emperor performed sacrifices to Heaven. These drums were set up in 1902 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Emperor Gojong's accession to the throne. These give shape to the instruments used when offering sacrifices to Heaven, so dragon patterns are carved in relief on the bodies of the drums. These are among the best examples of late Joseon sculpture.
