Traditional Seoul, Korea’s Ancient Capital

Hwanggungu, Hwangudan

Hwanggungu, a three-storied octagonal building where memorial tablets of the Heaven gods were kept, at Hwangudan, the altar where an emperor performed sacrifices to Heaven. Originally Nambyeolgung, a facility to greet Chinese envoys during the late Joseon era, was at this site, but when Emperor Gojong (1852-1919) acceded to the throne in 1879, Hwangudan was erected here in accordance with the etiquette of the empire.
