Eternal Rome, Italy’s capital
The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II) or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Motherland), the immense monument on Piazza Venezia dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878), king of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1849 to 1861 and the first king of Italy from 1861 to 1878. He helped lead the effort to unite Italy into one country. The monument was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885, inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935.
