Pompeii

Dog mosaic, Pompeii

The well preserved mosaic floor in the “House of the Tragic Poet” (also called The Homeric House or The Iliadic House), a typical 2nd century BCE Roman house in Pompeii. The vestibule floor is decorated with a mosaic of a domesticated dog leashed and chained. Below it are the words “CAVE CANEM”, an ancient warning equivalent to the modern “Beware of the Dog”.
