The Afar Region in Northeastern Ethiopia is the homeland of the Afar people. It has an area of around 72,000 km² and its capital is the city of Semera (Samara), planned and built to replace Aysaita. The flag, used after 2012, has three horizontal stripes of blue, white and green in the fly and a red triangle at the hoist. The regional emblem, two crossed swords and a red pentagram are placed in the centre of the white stripe.
