Bahir Dar, the Blue Nile and Lake Tana
The falls of the Blue Nile, Tis Isat (meaning “smoke of fire”), near Bahir Dar - also known as Tis Abay, “smoking water”. It was one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Africa - 45 metres high and about 800 metres wide. Since 2003, however, a hydro-electric power station has reduced the flow to little more than a trickle.
