Nicosia, Capital of the Republic of Cyprus

Passage at Famagusta Gate, Nicosia

The vaulted passage through the earthwork rampart at Famagusta Gate, the chief gate of the city in the Caraffa bastion, built in 1567 by Venetians and restored by the Ottomans in 1821. In 1980, the Nicosia Municipality decided to restore the gate and re-use it as a cultural centre. This was completed in 1981, and since then it is a busy venue for exhibitions helping regenerate Taht-el-kale, Nicosia.
