Lefkoşa, the Turkish part of Nicosia

Atatürk statue, North Nicosia

The statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, with his slogan “Ne Mutlu Türküm Diyene” (How happy is the one who says I am a Turk). He was the founder of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first President from 1923 until he died in 1938. Behind it is Kyrenia Gate (Girne Kapısı) in the Venetian wall at the northern part of the old city of North Nicosia, built in 1567 by the Venetians, as a part of the city walls.
