Dubrovnik, the historic Ragusa Republic

Rector's Palace, Church of Saint Blaise

The Church of Saint Blaise (Crkva svetoga Vlaha) is a Baroque church, built in 1715, facing Luža Square at the eastern of old Dubrovnik and dedicated to Saint Blaise (St. Vlaho). Medieval Slavs identified him with the pagan god Veles, the patron saint of the city of Dubrovnik and formerly the protector of the independent Republic of Ragusa. At left is the Rector’s Palace (Knežev dvor), the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa’s seat between the 14th century and 1808.
