Tirana, Albania’s capital

Memorial of Independence

The Memorial of Independence (Memoriali i Pavarësisë) in Rinia Park alongside Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit (Boulevard of the Martyrs of the Nation), Tirana’s central boulevard. It was inaugurated on 28 November 2012 as a symbol of Albania’s century of independence. The monument, some 6.5 metres high, 5.5 metres wide and weighing 15 tons, was created by artists Visar Obrija and Kai Kiklas in Austria. It is a symbol of the Albanian nation’s resistance in difficult times and wars. Its shape is as an open tower, symbolising the opening of Albania towards independence.
