Saranda, southern city on the Ionian Sea

5th-century synagogue

The ruins of a 5th-century synagogue complex, later an early Christian basilica, in the ancient fortress of Onhezmus, now in the centre of Saranda. In addition to religious activities, the complex would have served as a community centre and school for Bible studies. The buildings were destroyed either by an earthquake or by Slavic invasions. They were abandoned in the last quarter of the 6th Century CE.
