Gjirokastra, UNESCO World Heritage Town

Princess Argjiro

The sculpture of Princess Argjiro, created in 1988 by local artist Mihal Andruso, in the citadel of Gjirokastra. A popular legend relates that, when the Ottomans captured the town, Princess Argjiro refused to surrender and threw herself, clutching her young child, from the top of the castle battlements.
