Democratic Republic of Afghanistan 1987
In 28 July 1986 the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev announced the partial withdrawal of the Soviet army from Afghanistan. General Mohammed Najibullah, who had succeeded Karmal, was appointed President on 30 November 1987 upon adoption of a new constitution making concessions to moderate islamists. The National flag kept the same colours but the emblem was changed slightly: the red star disappeared and this gave it a more Islamic aspect.
