Bukhara: towards the outskirts

Wall decoration, Khojaev House

Traditional Bukharan wall design in one of the rooms in the house of Fayzulla Khojaev (Fayzullo Xo'jaev, 1896-1938), now a museum honouring his memory. In 1916 -1920 he was one of the leaders of the Young Bukharan Party (Jadids) against the corrupt rule of the Emir of Bukhara and, after the Red Army had overthrown him, became the president of the Bukhara People’s Republic and first leader of the Uzbek SSR; however, he was purged and executed on 13 March 1938 on the orders of Joseph Stalin.
